| This English Elm in a Broom
style was the lower part of a tall tree. The top was air layered off', after five or so years the
stump produced quite a nice little tree. The tree is in a very shallow circular tray.
The photo was taken prior to leaf break in spring 1999. This is one of my trees, collected in 1989. It was about ten years old at the time, and spent the next three years in the ground, while I decided what to do with it. It was as I said a tall tree, with the first major branch about 30cm above soil level. Layering the top off seemed the best option, and might produce a reasonable tree, giving little thought to the bottom part, I cut a "V" in the top and planted it in the ground. Elms are particularly good at producing buds on the trunk, this one made buds at the top of the "V", and it soon became apparent that it would produce a good broom style tree. The tree is about 30cm high and the same wide. |

| Here we see the tree the broom was created from. The upper part was layered off and the stump used to create the new tree. | |

The tree in summer 2002. I've put it back into a training pot to allow it to put on some extra growth. |
